An intense, gripping and riveting three season Irish crime series that keeps you on your toes from start to finish. Story follows a serial killer, Paul Spector (revealed at the beginning) played masterfully by Jamie Dornan (50 Shades of Grey fame) who targets certain type of professional girls/women, befriends them before maiming and killing them employing psychotic and demented fetishes.
His counterpart is Detective Superintendent Stella Gibson (Gillian Anderson, coming off her Golden Globe win for Crown who plays the role with aplomb). The mind bending games and the cat and mouse chase between the two lead characters elevates this show to an all time best in my books. Superintendent Gibson is called from London to Belfast specifically for handling this case. Her natural ability to find clues and pursue a cold blooded killer like Spector gives her the upper hand in many situations but Spector is a formidable opponent. She goads Spector into situations where he could reveal himself by using unconventional and sometimes seductive means but he knows where to draw the line in order not to get exposed. In a way, he admires her tenacity but wants to add her on his list of conquests. The Fall presents several tense moments and standoffs between the two main characters that has you biting your nails in every scene. Even though our natural instinct is to root for the tireless Detective Gibson to apprehend Spector, you find yourself hoping he escapes just so the show doesn’t end! Truly a must watch.
