MAID (Series)

Grade: 5/5

Genre: Drama

Seasons: 1

Ages: 16+

Another home run of a series from Netflix! A heart wrenching and realistic yet hopeful drama of a struggling young mom, Alex (played just brilliantly by Margaret Qualley) taking care of her infant daughter Maddy while dealing with emotional abuse from her husband. She has no choice but to escape from her husband but ends up leading a nomadic life, hopping from one place to the next searching for the end of the rainbow.

“Maid” showcases the real life problems women face who are in Alex’s position and have no one to turn to and would do anything to make ends meet for their children in order to keep afloat in this tough world.

She has to navigate government agencies to find any type of affordable housing, food and a school for her child and at the same time search for employment. She ends up getting a job as a maid and in turn – gets to meet all types of people, good and bad in the process and pens down all her experiences in a diary,

Alex’s eccentric mother in the movie, Paula (Andie Macdowell), is her mom in real life as well! One can see the connection. Unfortunately for Alex, no one is able to pull her out of the misery she is enduring and she learns she can only rely on herself to navigate through life’s hardships. However the relationship between Alex and her daughter Maddy is what defines the show – it is so strong and the love and care the mother showers on her daughter feels real and authentic.

Maid is based on the book written by Stephanie LandMaid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother’s Will to Survive” and should be top of your must watch list!
