Synopsis: Indian drama that centers around a father’s unhealthy obsession with his two boys (Radha and Manju) becoming cricket batting superstars. Mohan (played by Rajesh Tailang) even married a female hockey player so his offsprings would have athletic genes! He frantically runs all over Mumbai taking his prodigies to exclusive cricket clubs and forcing Radha and Manju upon the clubs – who don’t take too kindly to that. They are consistently booted out from most places due to the father’s arrogance but eventually catch the eye of a retired famous cricket coach, Tommy Sir (Mahesh Manjrekar). They are given scholarships to attend the prestigious Weinberg Institute which is run by Nellie (played ably by Ratna Pathak Shah who is a common “mom” in Indian movies like Khoobsurat and Kapoor & Sons). The boys are fish out of water in the beginning but learn to adapt and make friends/enemies. The father makes sure to inflict the utmost strictness on both kids to keep their focus on cricket with the goal of getting selected to play in the domestic leagues.
Produced by Anil Kapoor and based on a novel by Aravind Adiga, Selection Day is a decent watch on a rainy day.
