DOPESICK (Series)

Grade: 5/5

Genre: Medical Drama

Seasons: 1

Ages: 16+

A fascinating eye opener into the lethal opioid epidemic in the United States, fueled by Purdue Pharma and the Sackler family in the mid-80s with the introduction of the OxyContin, a narcotic drug and trying, by hook or by crook, to sell it as a mainstream medicine rather than a last resort drug for pain relief.

It’s not a documentary, but a drama based on journalist Beth Macy’s book “Dopesick” she penned in 2018. Michael Keaton plays the role of a well-meaning local doctor in Virginia who gets roped in by the Purdue Pharma sales team who falsely claim that OxyContin is not addictive, a claim that stunningly, the FDA supported. Astounding to see the level of corruption at all levels and the avaricious nature of Purdue Pharma and their ilk looking to increase their profits at the cost of human lives.  Having gone through chronic pain, this series was extremely relatable and the opioid epidemic is a serious threat to the country.
