Bridgerton, need I say more? Probably speaking to the choir when I say this is a must watch. The new Downton Abbey with a racial component infused to make this a British period drama of the 21st century. Phoebe Dynevor and Regé-Jean Page play the lead characters Daphne and Simon respectively. Daphne is the daughter of Lady Violet Bridgerton who needs to marry off her eight children. Daphne is more of an independent minded soul and wants to marry for, God forbid, love. She meets Simon, the sophisticatedly rugged eligible bachelor Duke of Hastings and they create a clandestine alliance pretending to be a couple in front of the judgmental elite society of the 1800s just to buy some time until they find suitable suitors, so to speak.
Myriad of racy scenes between the two leads, current pop music references (“Thank U, Next” by Ariana Grande is played as background score), a gossip girl mystery that reveals itself at the end and other cultural taboos lends Bridgerton to fall into the new age of British period drama….with a twist.
